Scope and Content
This letter has been written in France and describes Daniel's experiences in the trenches. Daniel mentions that he is sending this letter by Lance Corporal Low who belongs to the Newton Grange near Edinburgh and is visiting home, so that he might tell his mother details which could not be said in an ordinary letter. Firstly Daniel mentions when he left Southampton they landed in Boulogne and travelled to the army base at Etaples. He mentions they went to a town closer to the firing line called Noeuz le Mines were they stayed for ten days, and then passed up the trenches in front of Hulluch which was held by the Germans. Daniel states that they practically keep returning to the same trenches which are called the 'hairpin' as it resembles the shape of a hairpin. Daniel states that each time they enter the trenches they must go through Vermelles and he is now back in a place called Allouagne which is five kilometres from Lillers. The Field Service Postcard enclosed with this letter stated that Daniel received a letter dated the 26/02/1916 on 29/02/1916.
