Administrative / Biographical History
In October 1968 , a meeting of clerical and secretarial staff was held at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, to discuss the formation of an association similar to the University of Edinburgh Association of Secretary-Typists and University of Aberdeen Association of Secretaries. This was agreed by the Glasgow staff and the University of Glasgow Association of Secretaries & Typists had its first formal meeting in January 1969 . By the Association's first annual general meeting in April 1969 , it had become known as the University of Glasgow Secretarial & Clerical Staff Association and had 73 members.
The aim of the Association was to encourage co-operation and understanding between its members, to discuss matters of common interest and to provide a means whereby representations could be made to the University and other bodies. Representations included salary scales and work conditions within the University. The association also provided a social function, organising trips to places of interest, sherry parties, Burns Suppers, and fashion shows.
A committee consisting of the president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, social convenor and 5 ordinary members managed the Association and the committee was elected annually at the annual general meeting in April. By the end of 1972 , the Association had become affiliated to the Association of Scottish University Secretaries & Clerical Staff, becoming known as the Association of Scottish Universities Secretaries & Clerical Staff (ASUSCS), Glasgow Branch. As such, it adopted the ASUSCS constitution whose objects were to negotiate salaries, terms and conditions for staff; regulate relations between secretarial and clerical staff; promote goodwill between branches; and provide advice on contracts, pensions, redundancy, disciplinary procedures and dismissal. The Association was independent of any political party.
In 1973 , the Glasgow Branch withheld subscriptions to the Association due to concerns relating to the election procedures to the national committee. Nothing is currently known about the Glasgow Branch after 1973.
