The Unit Management Group was formed in November 1985, and its remit was to consider and advise on the agenda for Board Meetings, to consider some items in more detail than the Board and to make recommendations. It can also act in an advisory capacity on setting up short-life task groups, developing ideas about ways in which Board members can play an active role in the professional activities of the Council. In addition, it advises the Director and staff of the Council on the ways in which regular accounts of SCRE's activities should be given to the Board, on preparation of documents, on taking decisions in line with Council policy on behalf of the Board, whilst being accountable to and reporting to Board meetings. In February 1991 the Board delegated to the UMG responsibilities for monitoring expenditure, estimates, staffing isssues and such other matters as are compatible with the Board's legal and statutory responsibilities.
