Scope and Content
The correspondence in the collection consists of: letter from Reid at Balmoral Castle, 1897, to Lady White Cooper in which he comments on how he has 'been so completely overwhelmed with work'; and, letter from Reid at Windsor Castle, 1899, to Lady Cooper.
Administrative / Biographical History
James Reid was born in Scotland on 23 October 1849. He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and he studied at Aberdeen University from which he graduated in 1869 with an MA. He subsequently obtained the degrees of MB and CM in 1872, and MD in 1875. Reid studied in Vienna, 1876-1877, and then he practised in Scotland, 1877-1881. He became the Resident Physician to Queen Victoria, 1881-1901, and he was also Physician-in-Ordinary to King Edward VII, 1899-1910. Reid was Consulting Physican at the Convalescent Home for Officers at Osborne, the King Edward VII Sanatorium at Midhurst, and at the Prince of Wales's General Hospital, Tottenham. Latterly he was Physician-in-Ordinary to King George V. Sir James Reid died on 28 June 1923.
