Administrative / Biographical History
The Jewish community in Aberdeen dates back to 1893, when a synagogue was opened in Marischal Street. By 1911, there were over 110 Jewish people in the city and a small Jewish section was opened in Grove Cemetery, now containing around 70 burials. In the 1930s, a small number of Jewish refugees from Europe came to the Aberdeen area and in 1939, the Aberdeen Jewish Refugee Committee sent 32 cases of clothing to Jewish/non-Aryan people in Budapest, Prague and Vienna. In June 1945, the current Aberdeen Synagogue was opened in Dee Street and there is still a small Jewish community of around 100.
