Administrative / Biographical History
Charles Pulsford was born in 1912 in Leek, Staffordshire. He was brought up in Arbroath and studied at the Edinburgh College of Art between 1933 and 1936. His fellowship at the Edinburgh College of Art (1939 - 47) was interrupted by two years' war service. A contemporary of the Edinburgh-trained modernists Alan Davie, William Gear and Eduardo Paolozzi, Pulsford developed his own semi-abstract style. He was the first abstract artist to be elected an associate of the RSA in 1959. He taught at the Edinburgh College of Art from 1947 - 1960 and was then made vice-principal and head of fine art at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. He retired in 1972 after a period as a visiting lecturer at the University of Edinburgh's architecture department. In the same year he published his collection of theoretical writings, entitled 'The Creative Cell'. He was married to the stained glass artist Bronwen Gordon. Pulsford died in 1989.
