Administrative / Biographical History
Charles and Catherine Moir and their family lived at Fernbank in Alford. Their only son, Charles Penny Moir Junior (1885 - 1917) was educated at Alford Public School and Gordon’s College before working for the Northern Assurance Company in Aberdeen. He is commemorated in their War Record along with 19 other staff from the Aberdeen office who lost their lives in the war. He enlisted for service in March 1916, joining the 31st Battalion Royal Fusiliers. In September of that year he was wounded at the Battle of the Somme. Returning to France in March 1917, he was slightly wounded on the 21st April and then more seriously on the 29th in the fighting around Arras and was sent home. On 24th October he was again sent to France and was severely wounded in fighting with the 8th Battalion at Cambrai on 24th November and died of his wounds at a casualty clearing station on 30th November 1917.
Charles Moir was buried at Tincourt New British Cemetery and is commemorated on the Alford war memorial. After the war, families were asked what inscription they would like on the commemorative headstone. Charles Moir chose for his son the words An Only Son Faithful Unto Death.
