Administrative / Biographical History
Thomas Neville George was born in Swansea, Wales in 1904 . He attended the University of Wales and gained a DSc. He then did postgraduate studies at St John's College, Cambridge, England and became a Fellow of the University of Wales in 1926. He was Professor of Geology and Head of the University Geology and Geography Department, University College, Swansea, 1933-1947 . He then became Professor of Geology at the University of Glasgow from 1947-1974 . He was President of the Geology Section of the British Association, Liverpool, England in 1953 and Woodward Lecturer at Yale University, United States of America in 1956. He became Vice-President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 1959-1961 , Fellow of the Royal Society in 1963 and Fellow of the Geological Society. He was Chairman of several committees including Newbattle Abbey College Executive Committee and the Geological Conservation Council. George was also President of various associations including the Geological Society of London (1968-1970) and the Palaeontological Association (1962-1964). He was a member of many other committees including the Geology and Geophysics Committee and the Mineral Resources Consultative Committee. George was awarded several honorary prizes including an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Rennes, France, 1956 and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Wales in 1970. George published many articles including: Evolution in Outline in 1951 and British Regional Geology, North Wales in 1961. Thomas Neville George died in 1980.
