Scope and Content
Photographs and printed images collected by Bernera museum recording life in Bernera (Great Bernera, Lewis and Harris, Outer Hebrides, Scotland). The collection includes images of residents of Bernera, first and second world war service people, and nurses serving Bernera during and after the wars; images of emigrants from Bernera; residents of the communities of Breaclete, Tir Mor Crulivig and Earshader, Hacklete, Kirkibost and Tobson. Further images record crofts and croft houses, schools and school children, and the historical landscape of Bernera, as well as traditional working life in the area including sea fishing, creel making, Ghillie work, sheep farming and peat cutting. A further series captures local workers building the Bernera bridge. Note that where known, personal names are given in English form, Gaelic form and croft(s) of residence are stated.
