  Guthrie was Director of the National Fund for Research into Crippling Diseases (better known as Action Research for the Crippled Child). He retired in 1976 but continued to be active in fund-raising for research into disease. The Duncan Guthrie Institute of Medical Genetics at Glasgow (opened 1981) was named in his honour.
