Administrative / Biographical History
Cecile Walton was born in Glasgow in 1891, the daughter of the artist E. A. Taylor. A painter, printmaker and illustrator, she studied in London, Edinburgh, Paris and Florence, influenced by the styles of Rossetti, Whistler and Jessie M. King. Walton married the artist Eric Robertson at the age of 18, and began to concentrate on watercolour illustrations of fairy tales and portraits. She became a member of the Edinburgh Group, with her career reaching its peak in the 1920s. After the failure of her marriage with Robertson, she instead worked as a décor artist, children's author and organiser of the BBC's 'Children's Hour' in 1933. After a period of travel in North Africa, she settled in Kirkcudbright where she began to paint again. She died in 1956.
