Administrative / Biographical History
David Waterson was born in Brechin in 1870. After studying at the Edinburgh College of Art, he constructed his own press and taught himself etching. He sent examples of his etching to Seymour Haden, then President of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, which led to the British Museum requesting a portfolio of 70 etchings for their own collection. Thereafter a long association with Swedish patrons developed, including a friendship with King Gustav. Waterson created mezzotints, but also executed coloured etchings, pastoral drawings and watercolour drawings. He undertook portrait commissions, and became increasingly interested in lettering and illumination, creating the 'Lockit Book' containing the roll of the Freemen of Brechin. He died in Brechin in 1954.
