Administrative / Biographical History
Reverend John Peel (1798-1875), younger brother of statesman Sir Robert Peel, was vicar of Stone, Worcestershire, from 1828, Prebendary of Canterbury, 1829-45, and Dean of Worcester, 1845-75. In 1824 he married Augusta Swinfen (died 1861) by whom he had three children. Between 1817 and 1834 Reverend and Mrs John Peel purchased personal and household goods and services from companies across the south of England, including Birmingham, Brighton, Broadstairs, Canterbury, Cowes, Kidderminster, London, Oxford, Ramsgate, Stone, Tamworth, Taunton, Tunbridge Wells and Worcester. Many of the items were most likely purchased as they travelled around the area. They also purchased a number of goods from Brussels and Paris.
The collection includes a large series of early billhead receipts.
John Peel held an account with Dorrien, Magens & Co, bankers of Finch Lane, London.
