Lizzie Jane Anderson was born in South Yell, Shetland, in 1905. Lizzie attended the University of Glasgow from 1926-1929 , taking classes in Chemistry, Natural Philosophy and Mathematics in her first year; Mathematics (Higher) and Zoology in her second, and Geography, Chemistry (Higher) and Education in her third and final year. She was awarded a first class certificate in Zoology in 1928. She graduated with a BSc in November 1929 and subsequently became a teacher in Shetland until she married Edward Henry in 1945 .
