Administrative / Biographical History
The 1922 Group consisted of a number of Edinburgh College of Art students who graduated in 1922. It was founded by William Gilles and William MacTaggart, and included A. V. Couling, William Crozier, William Geissler, David Gunn, George Wright Hall, Alexander Graham Munro and George C. Watson. Annual exhibitions were held in Edinburgh for the next six years, and their work was characterised as being 'Francophile, colourful, serious and civilised' (Hardy). The Group was the closest approximation to an Edinburgh School. William Munro, Fraserburgh-based painter and art teacher, was a member of the 1922 Group. His landscapes of the western Highlands recieved critical acclaim.
