Administrative / Biographical History
Elizabeth Dempster was born in Greenock in 1909. Orphaned at an early age, she studied at Edinburgh College of Art under Alexander Carrick and Norman Forrest. She continued her studies in London and Munich and remained a carver predominantly in wood and stone throughout her career. She was commissioned by the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1938 to execute a large silver seahorse for the Empire Exhibition in Glasgow and later completed three large oak figures for the High Kirk of St Giles. She worked with Pilkington Jackson on the Royal Scots memorial in Princes Street Garden, and assisted Hew Lorimer in carving seven of the exterior carvings for the National Library of Scotland. She was elected to the ARSA in 1960 and died in 1987.
