Administrative / Biographical History
Sydney George Checkland was born in 1916 in Ottawa, Canada. He was educated at the Lisgar Collegiate Institute, Ottowa and Birmingham University. During the Second World War he served in the British and Canadian Forces. After the end of the war he lectured at Liverpool and Cambridge Universities, England and was Lecturer in History at Trinity College before becoming Professor of Economic History at Glasgow University in 1957 . In the early 1970s he wrote Scottish Banking: A History 1695-1973 and it was as a result of this work that the bulk of the material in this collection was assembled. He retired in 1982 and died in 1986 .
