Administrative / Biographical History
Thomas Lang was the son of a merchant sea captain also called Thomas Lang. In 1820 , he was a partner in Lang, Baine & Co , merchants of Westburn Street, Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland. Their major trading interests were in shipping dried salt cod from Newfoundland, Canada, for the European continent. By 1839 the firm had set up a subsidiary company, Baine, Johnston & Co , Newfoundland. Partners in the firms in 1839 were Walter Baine, James Johnston, James Johnston Grieve and Walter Grieve.
