Administrative / Biographical History
Commissioned to meet the projected growth in students numbers in the 1960s, the project began as a closed competition won by Grenfell Baines & Hargreaves - Building Design Partnership of Preston. The hall of residence was realised using funds made available by grant (£300,000) from the Wolfson Foundation which was set up by the Glaswegian businessman, Sir Isaac Wolfson (1897-1991), after whom the building takes its name. It was opened in 1964-5 and was extended in 1967.
