Administrative / Biographical History
At the beginning of the twentieth century the School was organised into four departments: Architecture; Drawing & Painting; Design and Decorative Art; Modelling. Following restructuring, the School of Design was established and the first Head of Design, G.W. Lennox Paterson (Head of Department: Design 1975/76 - 1978/79), was appointed in 1975. In 1987 a joint BEng course in Product Design Engineering with the University of Glasgow was established and the Graphic Design, Illustration & Photography department became Visual Communication in 1998. In 1999 the Textiles department unified the previously separated departments of Printed and Knitted and Embroidered and Woven textiles.
