Administrative / Biographical History
Dorrith Marianne Oppenheim was born in 1931 in Kassel in Germany and came to Scotland on the Kindertransport in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, aged 7. Her grandfather, Dr Julius Oppenheim, had received an Iron Cross for his services in the Red Cross in the First World War, as did her father, Hans Oppenheim, a dragoons officer– but this did not help to save them from the Nazis. Dorrith’s parents, Hans and Trude (nee Lindenfeld), who were unable to follow their daughter to Scotland, ended up in Theresienstadt and later perished in Auschwitz. Dorrith was fostered by Fred and Sophie Gallimore in Edinburgh She married Andrew Sim in 1952 and together they raised their family near Glasgow, Scotland.
Dorrith's father, Hans Oppenheim, had siblings including Ernst and Alice. His mother, Dorrith's grandmother, was Alma Oppenheim (nee Meyer), whose ancestor Mendel Meyer's license to practice business in Kassel, dating to 1789, is included in the collection. Hans' grandfather, Dorrith's great-grandfather, was Isaac Joseph Oppenheim. On her mother's side, Dorrith's grandparents were Jacob Lindenfeld and Minna Engersch.
