  78 pages, 15cm, manuscript. On inside front cover a manuscript note by Ross reads 'Book I. This book contains fair-copied verses up to page 38, and must have been written out in Madras in 1883. All the verses up to the Contention (page 17) were written in England before I went to India in August 1881. So were the Night Rde (p.30) and the Drowned Child (p.36). The remainder up to page 38 were completed in Madras before I left it for Bangalore in Aug. 1883, Pages 39 to 45 were entered twenty years later in trial of a method of spelling. It is difficult to date many of the pieces because they were commended years before they were finished. 22.12.23. R.Ross'. The notebook is badly waterstained and mouldy.
