Administrative / Biographical History
Ross wrote this short work as an attempt to correct the views of some people who thought that Manson was responsible for much of Ross’s own research. In his preface he states that it is not meant as an attack on Manson but he obviously felt that the completed text could be libellous as he took legal advice from his son, Charles Ross, who recommended certain deletions and alterations before it was published as it could be ‘regarded as an attack, not on Sir Patrick Manson so much as on members of the medical profession in general’ (MED 5/5/7).
