Charter under the privy seal of King Charles I granting 100 pounds Sterling yearly to James Maitland during his lifetime, payable out of the revenues of the bishopric of Galloway and the annexed abbeys and priory, in virtue of a power reserved by the King of bestowing an annuity of 100 pounds out of the said revenues upon anyone he should nominate when the said bishopric and benefices were granted to the college by the King's signature of 11 November 1641.

Scope and Content
Privy seal for Scotland under Charles I. Pendant on a tag.
The seal represents a shield bearing arms: quaterly of four grand quarters. 1 and 4: SCOTLAND. 2: quaterly. I and IV: France. II and III: ENGLAND. 3: IRELAND. The shield is ensigned of an arched crown. Supporters: two lions. The legend is between carved borders: SIGILLVM SECRETVM CAROLI D.G. MAG. BRIT. FRAN. & HIB. REGIS.
The document is written on parchment in an upright bastard secretary hand. The first letter is ornamented.

Ch:1st wherein is narrated that in his Charter to the Colledge of Glasgow of the fewduties teynds and other rents of the Bishoprick of Galloway Abbacies of Tungland and Glencue and priory of Whithorn he reserved a pouer to himself with the burden of the subject there Disponed with 100 Pounds Starline yearly to be payed to any person he should name dureing his life And the Masters having accordingly Granted a personall obleidgement whereby they bound themselves to pay the said soume Therefor and in the right of the faculty reserved Hissaid Majesty by the Signiture, Gifts the said soume And assigns the personall obleidgement in favours of Mr. James Maitland of Auchinhamper The Signiture is dated 9 Septer 1642'.
