Scope and Content
Seal of Mary Queen of Scots (fragment). Integral seal tag.
On the obverse, her seal represents the Queen enthroned, wearing long robes and an arched crown. With her right hand she holds a sceptre terminating in a fleur-de-lys and her left hand is upon her breast. The throne, in Renaissance style, is of penelled work with a decorated canopy supported upon long ornamental columns and with a projecting footboard. The legend is between raised borders: MARIA DEI GRATIA REGINA SCOTORV. On the reverse, her seal represents a shield bearing the royal arms of Scotland, from behind which depends the Collar and Order of the Thistle. The shield is ensigned of an arched crown and two banners in saltire each charged with a saltire surmounted at the fess point of an open crown. Supporters: two unicorns, each gorged with open crown and chained, upon a compartiment of turf. Behinf each unicorns is a thistle leaved, slipped and crowned. The legend is between raised borders: SALVVM FAC POPVLVM TVVM DNE.
