Scope and Content
Seal of Charles I King of the United Kingdom. Integral seal tag.
On the obverse, the seal represents a shield bearing arms: quaterly of four grand quarters. 1 and 4: SCOTLAND. 2: quaterly. I and IV: FRANCE. II and III: ENGLAND. 3: IRELAND. The shield, from behind which depends the Garter and the Collar of the Order of the Thistle, is ensigned of an arched crown and two banners in saltire, the right charged with the saltire of St Andrew and the left with the cross of St George. Supporters: to the right, a unicorn crowned with an arched crown, gorged with an open crown and chained. To the left: a lion similarly crowned. The Legend is between raised borders: CAROLUS D.G. MAG. BRIT. FRAN. ET HIB. REX. On the reverse, the seal represents the King on horseback wearing plate armour, an arched crown and short beard. His right hand is elevated, the had holding a sword and in his left hand he holds the reins. The horse gallops over a compartment extending into the borders with a representation of Edinburgh in the background; it wears close-fitting caparisons charged in front with a thistle leaved and slipped and behind with a rose. Above its head is a fleur-de-lys and above its tail a portcullis. The legend is between raised borders: DEUS JUDICIUM TUUM REGI DA.
The document written on parchment in an angular, upright bastard hand. The first letters are ornamented.
