Scope and Content
Small fragment of the Great Seal of Scotland after the Union of the Crowns. Pendant on a tag.
The complete seal would have represented, on the obverse, a shield bearing arms: quaterly of four grand quarters. 1 and 4: SCOTLAND. 2: quaterly. I and IV: FRANCE. II and III: ENGLAND. 3: IRELAND. The shield is surrounded by the Garter and the Collar of the Order of the Thistle, and ensigned of an arched crown and two banners in saltire, the right charged with the saltire of St Andrew and the left with the cross of St George. Supporters: upon a compartment of hilly ground: to the right, a unicorn crowned with an arched crown, gorged with an open crown and chained. To the left: a lion similarly crowned. The legend is around the upper part of the seal: IACOBVS D.G. MAG. BRIT. FRAN. ET HIB. REX. Carved borders. On the reverse, the seal would have represented the King on horseback wearing plate armour, an arched crown and short beard. His right hand is elevated, the hand holding a sword truncated by the inner border and in his left hand he holds the reins. The horse gallops over a compartment of hilly country extending into the border of the seal, it wears short close-fitting caparisons charged in front with a thistle leaved and slipped and behind with a rose. Above its head is a fleur-de-lys and above its tail a portcullis. The legend is around the upper part of the seal: DEVS IVDICIVM TVVM REGI DA. Carved borders.
The document is written on parchment in a upright bastard secretary hand. The letters on the first line are heaviy ornamented.
