John Lennie Shearer was born in Stronsay in 1918. He attended Kirkwall Grammar School, then trained as a grocer with Lipton's in Nairn. He worked in the Queensgate Hotel in Inverness before enlisting in the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman at the outbreak of the Second World War. He later trained as electrician and Torpedo Gunner's Mate, and rose to the rank of Petty Officer. After the war he worked as an electrician in Mull.
