Administrative / Biographical History
Orkney Pig Producers' Association was founded in 1959 following a breakaway by local farmers from the Fatstock Marketing Corporation. The inaugural meeting was held in Kirkwall and St. Ola Community Centre. There were sixty-eight founding members who paid ten shillings each, and representatives were elected from fourteen regions of Orkney, as well as chairman, vice chairman, secretary and treasurer. The Association was to help with negotiations between producers and curers and to find alternative markets for pig products. Representatives from local outlets and other businesses could make representations to the Association which were then debated by the members. The organisation was still in existence in 1965
