• Administrative / Biographical History

  George Low (1747-1795) was minister of Birsay Parish from 1774 and served in that respect until his death. He was a keen naturalist and studied the flora and fauna of Orkney and Shetland. His work on the wildlife of Orkney, 'Fauna Orcadensis', was not published until 1813 due to the loss and eventual resurfacing of the manuscript. The manuscript for his work, 'Flora Orcadensis', remained in obscurity until 1991 when it was finally published.Malcolm Stewart lived at Hoy Lodge, Hoy, from the 1950s to the 1980s.
