'Notes on George Petrie, 1818 - 1875, Antiquary and Sheriff Clerk' compiled in 1995
Administrative / Biographical History
George Petrie (1818 - 1875) was an antiquary and Sheriff Clerk.Compiled by Margaret Watters, Stenness, and Bill and Sheila Cormack, Lockerbie. 'This originated in an attempt to ascertain the circumstances of the find of a fragment of exotic Greek porphyry in a stone urn on Hunda by George Petrie, followed by an enquiry from a present-day Petrie as to his origins and family. These entailed checking not only his published works but reports in the press of his talks and his voluminous diaries, notes and correspondence in the Society of Antiquaries and the National Monuments Record of Scotland, as well as Old Parish and Census Records. Gradually there appeared a curriculum vitae of one of Orkney's most distinguished sons.'Since his letters and notebooks have already been dredged through by numerous researchers, only selected material from these has been reproduced here, but it is hoped that the fairly detailed references to his talks and articles in the local press may be of value and interest, if only to show his enormous energy and enthusiasm.
