  Mannum's 'grand old man' was David Shearer, son of Peter Shearer of Holm, who together with his brother John established a business manufacturing agricultural implements in Mannum in 1877. David Shearer is credited with building the first motor car in Australia. Mannum is a town in South Australia about 90 km from Adelaide.
