Robertson/Hercus family Kirkwall

Scope and Content
Miscellaneous papers, mainly relating to Robertson/Hercus family of Main Street, Kirkwall, 1916-c1960. Includes:Correspondence and related material concerning the service of Mrs Joey Tait's great uncle, Pte W C Robertson with the Seaforth Highlanders during World War I. It includes letters from him at the front and his wounding and subsequent death at Ypres in April 1918. Further correspondence indicates location of his grave and includes a photograph of it, 1916-1928; "The Last Voyage of the Margarethe", written in his old age by Peter Hercus, a seaman aged about 20 who was one of the crew. The Margarethe was a brigantine built in Norway and owned by Messrs S Reid and Co. Kirkwall. She was wrecked off Copinsay in January 1896. c1960; Jotter, kept as a scrapbook of "Personalities You May Have Met" series, published in The Orkney Herald kept by Audrey Hercus, sister of Mrs Tait, 1938-1939; Typed transcript of diary of Ursula M Hercus, 16 Main Street, Kirkwall (born 1902 died of consumption 1920) 1919-1920; Photocopy cargo book of smack Narcissus of Kirkwall official number 91542, 1906-1913; Local pass certificate of discharge and testimonial relating to Peter Hercus, 1894-1917; Bowling averages and fielding totals for Kirkwall Cricket and Athletic Club Bignold Challenge Shield, 1926.
