Administrative / Biographical History
William Wards was master of the brigantine 'Britannia' until its sale in 1824. He owned several properties in Stromness and Innertown until their roup in 1848. He appears to have been the son of William Wards, carpenter, who was married to Isobel Cromarty, daughter of Marjory Irving and Adam Cromarty, who received lands in Stromness from Marjory Irving's parents. Marjory Irving and Janet Cromarty (her daughter and William junior's aunt) also disponed lands and a dwelling house in Stromness to William Wards junior.
