Administrative / Biographical History
The cathedral of St. Magnus was begun in 1137, only two years after the canonisation of the saint. It shows signs of both Durham and French work and is built of local red stone and a yellow sandstone thought to have been brought from Eday. It is one of only two pre-Reformation cathedrals in Scotland that are still structurally complete. James III (1452 - 1488) when he acquired Orkney in 1486 bestowed the cathedral on the burgh.
