Administrative / Biographical History
The First Statistical Account of Scotland took place in the 1790s under the auspices of Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster in Sutherland. The Statistical Account was a detailed survey of Scotland undertaken by the ministers of each parish covering such topics as Topographical Features, Antiquities, Industry and Agriculture, Notable People, Population and Religious Life. The Second Statistical Account, known as the New Statistical Account, was undertaken in the 1830s - 1840s and the most recent, the Third Statistical Account, took place late in the 20th century.
