The Highland area is made up of the former counties of Inverness, Ross and Cromarty, Nairn, Caithness, and Sutherland, each of which had its own police force. Ardnamurchan and Glencoe were part of Argyll County Police until restructuring of policing in 1975 brough them under Northern Constabulary. Prior to being part of Northern Constabulary, the Skye and Lochalsh was policed by Inverness-shire Constabulary (1840-1968) and Inverness Constabulary (1968-1975).
Police records from all constabularies relating to the Skye and Lochalsh area form series SL/R91/D2 and are detailed in this catalogue. Police records for other areas within Highland can be found by contacting the relevant archive centre via Highland Archive Service.
