Administrative / Biographical History
Edward Baird was born in Montrose, Angus in 1904. He attended the Glasgow School of Art from 1923 - 1927, and won the Newbery Medal as the top student in his year. He studied early Renaissance pictures on a travel scholarship to Italy, which influenced his own work. Employing meticulous detail in his work, he was also influenced by hyper-realism and surrealism. Baird taught at Dundee College of Art from 1938 - 40. His output was small, and he produced less than three dozen canvases over the course of his career. Most of his work was portraiture, and examples are held by the Scottish Arts Council and Dundee Art Galleries and Museums. The Arts Council mounted an exhibition of Baird's work in 1968, which revived interest in the previously forgotten artist. The SNGMA held a retrospective of Baird's work in 1992. He died in 1949.
