Scope and Content
Journal of a honeymoon tour through Scotland made in June 1856.
A pencil note on p.1 describes this as 'A Journal of my Father Corbet S Catly Before his marriage'. In the hand of the author of the volume at the head of the same page is given '4 June 1856, Wednesday, 42 Albany St Edinburgh'. [42 Albany St was at this time a lodging house]. However the text itself describes this as 'our marriage trip - the bride has left a mother's home'.
The journey was initially undertaken by rail, subsequently by public conveyance, visiting: Bridge of Allan [Perthshire], Perth, Dunkeld [Perthshire], Blair Atholl [Perthshire], Kenmore [Perthshire], Callander [Perthshire], Loch Katrine [Perthshire], Rowardennan [Stirlingshire], Luss [Dunbartonshire], Inverary, Oban [Argyllshire]. The journal ends in mid sentence at the approach locks to the Crinan Canal. For the most part a tourist journal, it includes an eye witness account of a wedding at Kenmore [p.32 et seq].
