Administrative / Biographical History
Under the terms of the Poor Law (Scotland) Act 1845 (8 & 9 Vict., c.83) groups of parishes could combine in order to provide indoor relief for the poor. They built poorhouses in order to house the poor who could not work or were too young or old to work.
In 1948 poorhouses were abolished, and many of the buildings evolved into residential and care homes for elderly, infirm, or handicapped persons.
