Scope and Content
Two boxes of typed and handwritten lecture notes; notebooks; essays and theses all related to Economic History and the teaching of Economic History at the University of Glasgow.
Administrative / Biographical History
Sir Laurence Colvin Hunter (1934- ) was Professor of Applied Economics, 1970 to 2003. He was Vice-Principal, 1982 to 1986; Director of External Relations from 1987 to 1990 and Director of the Business School from 1996 until 1999.
Hunter studied at the University, graduating MA in 1956, and at University College, Oxford, where he graduated DPhil in 1959. He was commissioned during his National Service (1959-61), then took up a one-year post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago before returning to Glasgow in 1962 as a lecturer in applied economics in the University's Department of Social and Economic Research. He became a titular professor in 1969, the year before he was appointed to the Chair, succeeding Professor Donald Robertson as Head of Department of Social and Economic Research. Hunter's research and teaching was primarily in the fields of labour economics, industrial relations and human resource management.
Among many public appointments, Hunter served on the (Wilberforce) Court of Inquiry into the Miners' Strike in 1972 and the Royal Commission on Legal Services in Scotland, 1976 to 1980, and he was Chairman of the Post Office Arbitration Tribunal, 1974 to 1992, and of the Police Negotiating Board from 1986 to 2000. He was an independent founder member of Council of the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS), serving from 1974-86. In 1987 he was made a CBE and he was knighted in 1995. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1986 and served as Treasurer for the Society from 1999-2004.
He is currently Emeritus Professor and Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the School of Business and Management and continues various research and writing interests.
