Scope and Content
Includes Sanitary Inspector's reports and papers (D-HE1/4/1-16); Instructions for the Medical, Inspecting and Cleansing Officers (D-HE1/4/17); Rules and Regulations for the Proper Sanitary Condition of Cow-Houses and Byres (D-HE1/4/18); Manchester and Glasgow Sewage Works (D-HE1/4/19); Sewage Effluent From[?] Public Works (D-HE1/4/20).
The Sanitary Inspector's reports include tables of: nuisances attended; common lodging houses and houses let in lodgings inspected; night inspections; female visitations; cases of infectious disease found and processed; vaccinations; drain testing; bakehouses, dairies, cowsheds and milkshops inspected; adulterated food tested; meat inspected; Margarine Act enforcements; limewashing; female lavatories inspected; numbers of inmates in reception houses; and interments. Also work done in Belvidere wash house and disinfections. Later Shop Hours Act and Factories Act enforcement added.
The first volume includes annual reports by the Medical Officer of Health as the two were published together during this period. The volume has been included in this series as it mostly contains Sanitary Department reports and articles.
There are no Sanitary Department reports for 1878-1881, 1883-1886 and 1898-1903. There is a further copy of the 1872 Sanitary Inspector's report at D-HE/1/1/5.
