Administrative / Biographical History
During the 1920s and 1930s Glasgow Corporation built a large number of municipal houses of the type illustrated in Knightswood, to rehouse people from city-centre tenements. The school opened in 1930 for the children who had recently moved to the area. On 13-14 March 1941, Knightswood was to experience its blackest night. Bankhead School, which was being used as a first aid post, fire station and ARP centre, was hit by a German landmine dropped by parachute onto the school’s playground. 39 people were killed. St David’s Church and some surrounding houses were damaged in the raid and many other homes were destroyed. The badly damaged school was rebuilt and extended after the war, being formally completed in 1960.
Formerly Knightswood Cloberhill and Bankhead.
