Scope and Content
The series includes Reports on Glasgow housing conditions (D-HE4/1/1); Plans of Some Congested Areas in Glasgow (D-HE4/1/2); Uninhabitable Houses in South Western Division (D-HE4/1/3); City of Glasgow Improvement Schemes Schedules and Plans (D-HE4/1/4-5); Housing (Scotland) Acts Records of Representation (D-HE4/1/6); Legal Proceedings relating to housing issues (D-HE4/1/7); Photographs relating to housing of the Glasgow Public Health Department (D-HE4/1/8).
The Public Health Department housing functions related to: overcrowding; housing inspections and issuing certificates for disrepair; rehousing of tuberculous families; closure of housing due to deterioration and demolition under clearance schemes; supervision of tenants especially concerning cleanliness; and disinfestation [source: Medical Officer of Health report 1960, D-HE/1/1/56]. In contrast, the Housing Department, established in September 1919 had as its main functions: the purchase of land for housing schemes; the preparation of plans; organisation of utilities; maintenance etc [source: review of operations 1919-1927, D-HE/6/3/27]. From 1923-1935 fifteen slum clearance schemes were undertaken [source: D-HE/6/3/34 Centenary of Civic Administration - Glasgow's Souvenir of the Silver Jubilee].
