The Vital Statistics of Glasgow
- Reference:GB 243 D-HE1/2
- Dates of Creation:1823 - 1891

- Physical Description:22 items; 17 volumes
Scope and Content
These volumes contain statistics on population; numbers of deaths by age and cause; number of burials; number of births and marriages; animals slaughtered; custom duties paid; pauperism; railway traffic etc. The amount of information on each subject varies from year to year. The gap in the loose copies from 1862-1865 is partly filled by D-HE/1/2/36.
Although in most cases the reports were compiled by the City Chamberlain, there is a lot of overlap with the statistics kept by the Medical Officer of Health.
There are five different sets of volumes which have been catalogued in this series:
D-HE/1/2/1-22 - loose copies 1844-1886
D-HE/1/2/23-27 - bound copies of the Sanitary Office 1863-1880
D-HE/1/2/28 - reports by the Medical Officer of Health 1880-1885
D-HE/1/2/29-31 - bound copies of the Sanitary Office 1869-1879
D-HE/1/2/32-34 - bound copies of the Medical Officer 1870-1885
D-HE/1/2/35-36 - single volumes
