Scope and Content
On the outbreak of war the Lord Provost and the City of Glasgow were authorised to raise several battalions and equip them for battle. The companies raised were:-
1st and 2nd Glasgow Battalion H.L.I. (Highland Light Infantry)
15th (Service) Battalion H.L.I.
16th (Service) Battalion H.L.I.
18th (Service) Battalion H.L.I.
159th (Glasgow) Brigade, R.F.A. (Royal Field Artillery)
206th Field Company (Glasgow), R.E. (Royal Engineers)
Head Quarters Divisional Engineers.
217th (Fortress) Company (Glasgow), R.E. [from 18 Nov. 1915 the 217th (Army Troops) Company (Glasgow)].
218th Field Company, R.E.
219th Field Company, R.E.
32nd Divisional (Glasgow) Signal Company, R.E. [Taken over by the War Deptartment on 20 Aug. 1915, and on transfer from the 4th Army to the 5th Army re-numbered as the 41st]
The city not only recruited men for the companies, but undertook to clothe them, supply all their equipment, billet them in neighbouring towns, and erect the large Gailes Camp to accommodate them until they were taken over by the War Office.
