Scope and Content
Includes Reports on the Medical Inspection and Treatment of School Children (D-HE1/8/1-12).
The medical inspection and treatment of school children as a responsibility of the local authority arose from the 1902 Royal Commission on Physical Training. This in turn had been established as a result of the rejection on health grounds of so many recruits in the South African Wars. Legislation in this area which impacted on the Public Health Department was the Notification of Births Act 1907. This meant that the Medical Officer of Health had to be notified within 36 hours of a birth. A health visitor could then be sent to evaluate the case.
The School Health Service eventually included dentists and opticians.
The reports of the School Health Service were included in the Medical Officer of Health's report from 1962. The items in this series were reprinted from the Reports of the Medical Officer of Health but include additional information on staff numbers. The 1937 report is at D-HE/5/3/28 and there are also reports for 1910-1972 in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board Archives (ref: HB38) and for 1931-1962 at D-TC/7/11/4.
