Scope and Content
This series includes Adulteration of Food Complaint Book (D-HE4/7/1); Tuberculous Meat - Proceedings at Trial (D-HE4/7/2); Sampling Register (D-HE4/7/3); Photograph albums about food hygiene at Bilsland Bakery (D-HE4/7/4).
There was a Food Adulteration Act as early as 1872 and food standards were part of the Department's functions from its earliest days. The Department worked closely with the Bacteriological Laboratory to analyse food samples leading to prosecutions where infringements in standards or adulteration was found.
