Scope and Content
Records pertaining to the Andrew Bain Memorial Collection, presented to the Mitchell Library by Andrew Bain Junior (1844 - 1926). Bain's father, also Andrew (1810 - 1858), founded Bell & Bain, printers, publishers and bookbinders in 1831 with partner James Bell. Bell & Bain made an important contribution to printing in Glasgow, with many books on the city's history bearing their imprint. Andrew Bain Junior was also involved in Bell & Bain for a spell before making his fortune in shipbuilding as founder of Clydesdale Iron Works.
