Administrative / Biographical History
Barony Parochial Board was formed under the Poor Law (Scotland) Act 1845 (8 & 9 Vict., c.83). It was the largest and most populous civil parish in Scotland, lying to the north and east of the city centre and extending well beyond the city limits. It constructed a poorhouse at Barnhill in Springburn (opened 1853) and a mental asylum at Woodilee in Lenzie (opened 1875). In 1894 the board was replaced by an elected parish council (Local Government (Scotland) Act 1894, 57 & 58 Vict., c.58), but was united with the City of Glasgow Parish Council only four years later, to form Glasgow Parish Council.
